THE LONG JOURNEY OF THE PLAN
THE PLAN as you see it now is the result of several evolutions. Josh Harraway, writer and
director of THE PLAN, adapted the script from an original story. The events of the story are actually based on an
incident that happened to him one night in West Palm Beach Florida. The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
"I would tell the story to my dorm mates at school," Josh says, "and they would all just crack up.
Everyone would be hysterical. They'd be like 'Are you kidding? Did she really think she could douche with soda?' So, I knew
form the jump I was working with something a lot of people would think was funny."
Josh wrote a short story version of the event while attending Howard University then passed
it around generating quite a bit of buzz. An old friend, Jordan Kessler of Nu Image Films, suggested that Josh adapt
it for the screen. Josh did this immediately, but the entire story was still a mere 26 minutes long. So, Josh took two
other equally goofy short stories he'd written and adapted them to screenplay format as well, creating a tightly woven three
act screenplay all about the same main character: A young, sexually-frustrated suburban black kid who just can't seem
to figure things out.
"The reason it worked so well is because the short stories I was writing at the time all revolved
around the same main character. Me. I was a fucked up kid."
The story and the screenplay began circulating around Hollywood and in 1999 Josh
optioned the screenplay to a small (to be left anonymous) production company. Nothing came out of the deal and the rights
reverted back to his ownership. Josh continued his approach of asking for funding, setting up meetings, mailing out copies
and basically lobbying for his story until 2004. With the assistance of 3rd Eye films and Katherine Cheairs, Josh
Harraway assembled enough resources to produce the project himself.
"I was like screw it. I'll just make the film myself."
The plan was to at least make the first third of the film, the original soda pop douche story, then
use that as a calling card to procure funding for the rest of the production. Inspired by Billy Bob Thornton and the
"Sling Blade" phenomenon of making a short film first, entering it into festivals, gaining some attention, then making
a feature out of it, Josh directed, starred in and produced the film on this disc.
"It's not done though. There's two more acts. I'm gonna get this movie made. It's gonna be in theaters.
I just need some extra cash."
